The extremely old Debre Damo is 25 meters up a cliff, and can only be reached with a rope 25. A safety rope is supposed to prevent one from falling when slipping. This church is only accessible to men.

Abba Yohani Monastery in Tembein, Tigrai northern Ethiopia is one of the over 200 rock hewn churches found throughout the state. The rock hewn churches and monasteries were built around 1800 to 1600 years ago.

Built in the 13th century, these churches were made from monolithic blocks. Among the numerous Rock-Hewn Churches are Biete Medhani Alem, Biete Maskal, Biete Denagel and Biete Ghiorgis.
